Interfaith Leaders in New York Call for NYPD Accountability
A Prayer
(Rabbi Simkha Y. Weintraub, LCSW/Rabbis for Human Rights – North America)
Parent of All:
We are profoundly concerned that a segment of our population is being unjustly targeted --
Subject to wholesale surveillance, at work, in school, at prayer;
Painted with the broad brushes of suspicion and distrust; and
Singled out as potential terrorists and disloyal fifth-columnists.
We gather today to affirm that we are all kin in this great, diverse city of New York --
Unified in our commitment to Justice and Compassion,
Certain in our ability to forge a lawful and effective front in the face of bigotry, hatred, and violence,
Eager to join heads, hearts, and hands with Commissioner Kelly and the police department to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of all citizens and visitors.
We ask Your assistance today to help New York’s Finest move
From infiltrating to inspiring,
From profiling, pigeon-holing, and polarizing to partnering, public service, and peacemaking,
From planting seeds of divisiveness and discord to promoting common cause and joint purpose.
Help us to strengthen the social fabric of this remarkable metropolis,
building bridges, cultivating cooperation, and developing dialogue
so that all Your children in the family of humankind can shine and thrive together in peace.
עשה שלום במרומיו הוא יעשה שלום עלינו ועל כל יושבי תבל ואמרו אמן
May the One Who Makes Peace in the Highest Places Grant Peace Over New York,
Over the United States, and Over All Humankind, and let us say ‘Amen.’
