The gelt we eat on Chanukah is a sweet reminder of the freedom our people won many years ago. In his book Holidays, History and Halakhah, Eliezer Segal argues that the earliest sources that mention gelt on Chanukah are about students in Europe giving gelt to their teachers, inspired by the linguistic similarities between the Hebrew word Chanukah (dedication) and the Hebrew word chinnukh (education). This year, your gelt can be a tasty way to educate our synagogues and schools about a critical global human rights issue. Young children are trafficked and forced into working on cocoa farms with no pay and in unsafe conditions in the Ivory Coast, where more than half the world’s cocoa is grown. As consumers, we can assume most of the chocolate we eat comes from child labor or child slave labor. Is that the best way to celebrate our religious freedom?

This Chanukah, shine a light on a solution! We can support the 60,000 member farmers of Kuapa Kokoo, a Fair Trade cooperative in Ghana who are co-owners of Divine Chocolate. The organization is democratically run, and their children attend school rather than work in the fields.
