Justice for Jerusalem Campaign
Jerusalem
Yerushalayim
The city of peace
The city of wholeness
The city of God
The goal of T'ruah's Justice for Jerusalem Campaign is to transform the earthly Jerusalem into the heavenly, ideal city.
We present educational materials on Jerusalem in the interest of sparking a rich communal conversation about the nature, reality, and future of the city. We are not proposing a single solution to the question of what will happen to Jerusalem in final peace negotiations. Too often, conversations about Jerusalem get stuck in shouting matches about whether the city should or should not be divided. We want to move beyond this rhetoric to encourage conversation about Jerusalem as simultaneously a spiritual place and a place with deep political implications. We believe that these conversations will help us to move closer to creating Yerushalayim shel malah (the heavenly Jerusalem) here on earth.
We do not pretend to take a neutral perspective on questions of the reality in Jerusalem. We come to this issue, as to all of our work, with a deep commitment to human rights and to Jewish traditions of justice. We also come to this work as rabbis, most of whom have spent significant time in Jerusalem, who have had powerful religious experiences there, and who are committed to maintaining a Jewish spiritual center in the city.
In these materials, we focus on the conflict over East Jerusalem, as this has become a flashpoint in the entire Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
