The New Israel Fund and T'ruah A Brownbag Lunch for Rabbis Wednesday, April 11 (chol hamo'ed Pesach), 12:00 – 1:30 pm Please bring a brownbag lunch. Adalah: The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel is the leading organization working to advance equality for Arab (or Palestinian) citizens of Israel. Widely recognized for the consistently high quality of its legal advocacy, Adalah ("Justice" in Arabic) has successfully argued numerous landmark cases in front of the High Court of Israel on issues relating to land and planning rights, civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, and prisoners' rights. One of NIF's most prominent and cutting-edge grantee organizations, Adalah is a also high-profile target for critics. While Adalah is a legal organization seeking to create change through Israel's legal system, it is frequently and falsely accused of working tointernationalize legal and economic sanctions against of the of theState of Israel. This is a unique opportunity to hear about Adalah's important work and its role in Israeli society, and to participate in a frank and open discussion with the founding director of the organization. About Hassan Jabareen and Adalah Hassan received an L.L.M. in International Law and Human Rights from American University, Washington College of Law in 1996 and an L.L.B. in Law and a B.A. in Philosophy from Tel Aviv University in 1991. He worked as a staff attorney with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel for four years. A highly esteemed spokesperson and commentator, Jabareen is a source for various local and international media outlets. He has been teaching in Israeli law schools since 1998 as an Adjunct Lecturer on the legal status of Palestinian citizens of Israel, and publishes articles on citizenship, identity, and constitutionalism in academic law reviews. Hassan received the American University Peter Cicchino Award for Outstanding Advocacy in the Public Interest from American University, and he was chosen in 2005 as a Yale World Fellow. |
